C is For Corset

Good ol’ Wikipedia: A corset is a garment worn to hold and shape the torso into a desired shape for aesthetic or medical purposes (either for the duration of wearing it, or with a more lasting effect). Both men and women are known to wear corsets, though women are more common wearers.

HA! Men wore corsets. Rock out.  It’s about time. I guess when the good ol’ bra came along they skipped out on that…course, I’m still holding tight that the classic idea of the “bro” as suggested by Seinfeld’s classic funny man Kramer will come to fruition.

For me, the corset is another extreme piece that can be nestled in the all-American girls fashion repertoire without looking overly out there. It’s easy enough nowadays to hit Forever 21, Charlotte Russe, Etsy , Ebay and the like and find plenty of options that are wearable outside the boudoir. Personally, I find a good pair of rocker jeans and one go great with simple heels and a lack of ornate jewelry for a nice night out on the town. If you want to bring it to work, perhaps go with a corset style without boning underneath a suit. If you want to go a step further, think evening. While a lot of wedding gowns have corseted styles, many evenings can be spiced up when you go with a two  piece ensemble of a good dress skirt and a brocade or shimmery corset top.

An easy rule of thumb though – because corsets can go from class to trash in a second – watch your endowments! These aren’t “ye olde girl squeezers” as in the Renaissance. Keep the fit body conscious, but not the entire world conscious, of what assets you’ve got. It should still accent your shape without being over the top!

Enjoy it – it’s one of those great things about being a girl!
